Module 2: Biodiversity
Animated graphics and bite-sized explainers introduce key scientific terms and facts around biodiversity and ecosystems, highlighting their importance, interconnectedness and associated benefits.
-
Module 3: The nature crisis
Relatable examples from Wales and beyond explore the key drivers behind global nature loss and what that means for us in Wales.
-
Module 4: How is Wales responding
Easy-to-follow introductions explain the Welsh legislation that supports nature recovery, with a focus on Section 6 implementation and signposting to further support.
-
Module 5: The global response
Digestible explainers show how the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the 30 x 30 target inform National and Local Nature Recovery Action Plans.
-
Module 6: What does nature recovery look like?
Case studies and images unpack nature recovery strategies and the role of LNPs, showcasing collaboration and integration within existing duties.

Our partnership
Why have we developed an elearn?
How have we developed it?

What are we planning for the future?
Why have we developed an elearn?
Nature is in crisis; species are disappearing at an unprecedented rate, and our ecosystems are on the brink of collapse. As one of the world’s most nature-depleted countries, ranking in the lowest 10%, Wales can no longer ignore the call to action.
There is growing recognition at all levels of the need to act now. Welsh Government declared a Nature Emergency in 2021, and an increasing number of bodies from all sectors are following suit in adhering to global targets, which aim to protect 30% of the earth’s land mass and seas by 2030, working to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and ensure sustainable ecosystems.
The public sector faces mounting accountability through Section 6 of the Environment Act, which mandates that all public bodies must “maintain and enhance biodiversity”, reporting their activities across decision-making, business planning, and daily operations.
We all have a part to play in nature recovery, not just our scientists and our ecologists. However, not everyone understands the urgency, or has the confidence to know how they can help. That’s why Cynnal Cymru’s elearn was developed.
How have we developed it?
We specialise in co-creating course modules with our partners, creating and tailoring content using images, resources and information bespoke to each partner or locality. This gives us the chance to address specific local issues, myth bust, de-mystify organisational strategies or action plans, and signpost to specific contacts.
This project was a collaboration between LNP Cymru, Flintshire County Council, Cynnal Cymru and Tantrwm Media, working together to develop a core nature recovery elearn package. This elearn aims to support local authority staff in Wales to understand the nature crisis, build knowledge about individuals’ roles in nature recovery, and provide access to both information and support within specific authorities.
Several additional local authorities have since come on board, and we can now offer bespoke modules to strengthen these links.
Who are we working with
We partner with Tantrwm Media to create our elearns. Tantrwm Media is a Wales-based video production, digital and events company, linking people, ideas and technology for over 20 years. Tantrwm Media uses Rise Articulate to create all our elearns, conforming to all accessibility standards.
What are we planning for the future?
We now have a suite of elearn package options available for local authorities in Wales to purchase. For more information, please get in contact. We can provide you with a preview of the course and more information on the options available.
FAQs
Who is this elearn for?
Our biodiversity elearn aims to support local authority staff in Wales to understand the nature crisis, build knowledge about individuals’ roles in nature recovery, and provide access to both information and support within specific authorities. In its current guise the elearn is aimed at staff and associates working within a local authority setting. Cynnal Cymru are currently developing a version of the nature recovery elearn which is accessible for all audiences
What’s included in the course preview?
During the preview you will experience module 1 of the demonstrator course, which showcases digital content produced by our partners Tantrwm Media, and module 4, which explains relevant legislation, to understand the quality and design of our learning approach.
We also showcase module 2 of the ‘Customised’ elearn produced for one of our partners, Flintshire County Council, to demonstrate how sections can be tailored to include specific local context and information.
